The first volume of the three-volume study under the title "Central-Eastern Europe in the Second Half of the 20th Century" examines economic, social, political and international aspects of CEE countries' evolution in 1945-1965. Proceeding from an overall analysis of factual data, including new documentary and archive sources, many problems related to social transformations in the region are re-considered and specified. World War II outcomes for CEE countries, main theoretical conceptions of countries' development, socio-economic and political transformations are objectively evaluated, the regions' place and role in international relations at the initial "Cold War" stage are shown. The study addresses principal stages of the making of the world socialist system, the search for reforms aimed at "socialist renewal". A separate section focuses on the evolution of individual CEE countries.

The first part of this third and final volume of the research monograph "Central-Eastern Europe in the Second Half of the 20th Century" analyzes postsocialist transformation, including the transition from an administrative command to a market economy, and from totalitarianism and authoritarianism to democracy and the rule of law. The last decade of the 20th century was also a time when the CEE countries searched for new economic and political allies in the world under a radically changed geopolitical situation and the challenges of globalization. The authors of the monograph review the causes, paths and highly unambiguous effects of socio-economic and political restructuring in the CEE region.
